My dear sons and daughters,
Men of good-will everywhere,
and young people, you, in particular,

The theme of World Communications Day this year touches what I am sure is one of your chief interests: "Social Communications and youth". Undoubtedly, it is clear to everyone that there is an immense responsibi1ity on the part of all, before history and God Himself, to put to good account the extraordinary opportunities offered by the communications media to help young people to inform and form themselves, to bring out the real problems of the world, to seek the authentic values of life and to live up to their calling as individual persons and Christians.

Putera-puteriku terkasih, masyarakat yang berkehendak baik di mana pun juga berada, dan khususnya, kamu sekalian, para kaum muda.

Tema dari Hari Komunikasi Sosial Sedunia tahun ini menyentuh hal yang saya yakin menjadi salah satu perhatianmu yang pokok: "Komunikasi Sosial dan kaum muda". Pasti, sudah jelas bagi setiap orang bahwa ada pertanggungjawaban mendalam dalam setiap seginya, di hadapan sejarah dan di hadapan Allah sendiri, untuk memanfaatkan dengan sebaik-baiknya kesempatan-kesempatan luar biasa yang disediakan oleh media komunikasi untuk membantu kaum muda menerima informasi dan membangun diri, untuk menampilkan masalah-masalah dunia yang nyata, untuk mencari nilai-nilai hidup yang sejati dan untuk menghayati panggilan mereka sebagai pribadi dan sebagai umat kristiani.

Beloved Sons and Daughters, and men of good will everywhere,

The observation of the third annual "World Communications Day" with the theme "Social Communications and the Family" affords Us an opportunity which We accept with pleasure, as We have done on previous similar occasions, of inviting all those who are interested, to a positive and fruitful meditation on this subject. Indeed, who can claim today not to be affected by a phenomenon of such world-wide proportions as the ever growing expansion, of the press, radio, motion pictures and television, or by their immense influence on families?

Pengamatan akan Hari Komunikasi Sosial yang ke tiga dengan tema "Komunikasi Sosial dan Keluarga" memberi kita kesempatan yang kita sambut dengan senang hati, sebagaimana sudah kita lakukan pada kesempatan-kesempatan sebelumnya, untuk mengundang semua orang yang berminat, untuk merenungkan tema ini secara positif dan berbuah. Jelas, siapa yang jaman ini dapat menyatakan bahwa dirinya tidak dipengaruhi oleh gejala yang mendunia dengan sangat pesat dari pers, radio, film dan televisi, atau menyatakan bahwa keluarganya tidak secara mendalam dipengaruhi?

Theme: Church and Social Communication: 

First World Communication Day

 We address you, dear brothers and sons, as World Communications Day, which will be held for the first time on Sunday, Seventh of May, approaches.

The Church, realizing "that she is truly and intimately linked with mankind and its history" (1), wishes by means of this initiative, proposed by the Second Vatican Ecumenical Council, to draw the attention of her children and of all men of good will to the vast and complex phenomenon of the modem means of social communication, such as the press, motion pictures, radio and television, which form one of the most characteristic notes of modern civilization.

Social Communications and the Development of Nations

We would like to invite you all, our beloved sons and brothers, as well as all men of good will, to celebrate with us the Day specially dedicated to the means of social communication. We wish to help you to consider the significance of the changes that are taking place in this field under our very eyes, and to ponder the serious responsibilities that these imply for one and all. Until recently, many did not have anything more to stimulate their reflection than vague memories of what they learned at school or in the family and what they heard in their environment. Now however, with the echos of the press, motion pictures, radio and television clamoring for attention, new horizons open wide before them and they are attuned to the throbbing life of the universe. Who will not rejoice at this progress? Do we not all see in it a road destined by Providence for the advance of the whole of mankind? There is room for all hopes if man learns to master these techniques; but everything can be lost if he shirks his responsibilities.
